The origins of this ancient arming sword are truly shrouded in the mists of time. Understated in looks, the weapon bears limited ornamentation and remains a tool rather than a piece of jewelry. Functional in it’s balance and size, it promises no sparkling flames nor glittering lights. Yet, the quality and ominous form show something within it’s shadowed steel. For darkness is where it dwelt, but how it came from the rocks or who formed it is another matter.

The best of identifications tell a story that goes back over five hundred years; when there on Feylan was a race known as the darkwings. They were mighty and sleek, beautiful of form and strong on the wing indeed. Black skinned like the night sky with bright ruby eyes, the Darkwings were a type of winged elf, (Avariel in FR)  who flew by the light of the moon and stars and rarely ventured out in the brightness of the sun. The Lord of these folk was Corverscryn, mighty of the bow and spear. He was a head taller than other, and muscled like a land-bound warrior. Yet, he was gentle and rarely fought except for the defence of Feylan.

One winter, when a great mist swamped the worldly vales of Myndric, Corverscryn and three of his hunters ventured forth to chase a glorious stag that roamed the ancient forest. They brought their ravens with them, to help them locate and chase the mighty beast far across the woods. They caught the mighty roan stag whose silver antlers shone in the moonlight, and they brought him down claiming it as a great trophy. And it was – that morning, back at Ravenflight, whose high towers viewed the great basins forest and the shining lake below, the head of the great stag was mounted on the wall above the throne. And as the sun began to rise, and the feast rolled to its height, the head began to speak a tale of woe to those that had brought it down. With eloquent verse and poetics beyond mortal mind, the stag claimed that he was Rhegedryn, King of Stags and that he was favoured of the gods of the forest forever. And the curse came hard upon Corverscryn; that he and his clan would be lain low and his name fade from memory. Ravenflight became abandoned after the darkwings were defeated in a terrible battle with a foe that came from the mists, the remaining wings sought sanctuary in Feylan under the protection of the dragon-king.

Corverscryn’s sword, fast and potent, vanished on the battlefield and his body never recovered. Yet, it was sometimes recorded in the history of Saeradic interior as the blade Narn carried at his hip. Despite this, he was never seen drawing it from it’s deer-skin sheath, the memory of it’s existence likewise suppressed by Rhegedryn’s own bronze fur even after all this time.

This weapon might be regarded as the signature item of a darkwing  "Animal King" by certain sages.
